Umphrey's McGee facemelting

Umphrey's McGee put on an incredible show at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. They played 3 sets plus and encore, with the middle set featuring a string quartet adding some additional layers to the mix. Both the first and third sets featured the typical jamming styles (sounds composed but it's not, slow builds to giant climaxes) and the usual stop-on-a-dime, gear shifting composed sections as well. The first set ended with a cover of Steely Dan's "Reelin In the Years" and the encore was Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain"...appropriate for those who survived the torrential downpour of the middle set. The light show was amazing as usual. This is one of the most technically proficient, well-oiled machines making music...the antidote to a world filled with predictable pop tarts, back up dancers, and drum machines. The best description I can give is a healthy mix of Talking Heads, Rush, Iron Maiden, with the willingness to stretch out the jams. I highly recommend the UM Hall of Fame 2015 as well if you need an introduction to their live stuff on iTunes.
